![]() I think the cobalt blues stand out best in masstone, but in mixing are very similar to ultramarine. It does have higher tinting strength though.Īs for other cobalt pigments, they all have many varieties and all have their unique characteristics. The Schmincke Apatite pigment just doesn’t have the pure beauty in masstone as a genuine Cobalt Violet Deep PV14. I haven’t use their Cobalt Violet Deep but if the one I have is any indication it should be excellent and the price is very good at Dickblick. I have the Lefranc Cobalt Red Violet PV49 and it is actually the best example of PV49 I have tried. I think for the price the LeFranc are a great way to sample cobalt violet. The only real way to know if they will be useful for you is to try one out! They all are unique and cannot be exactly matched in masstone by mixes of other pigments.Ĭobalt violets in general are all weak tinting and their value beyond their unique masstones lies in their subtle mixing for example in portrait painting. There is the deep and light Cobalt Phosphate PV14, the very bright, almost red, violet Cobalt Ammonium Phosphate PV49 and there is the very bright “lilac” violet of Holbein’s Cobalt Lithium phosphate PV47. Now, first off there are a few different cobalt violets. Well Im not sure any color is “necessary” but some might be very useful. What praises or criticisms have you got for those who use this colour? Is it useful in mixes too, or just for those violets? I have heard about certain properties that other paints would not get.Īnd also the blue and green cobalts, same question, although i’m more certain about those. I have heard that a hue can be mixed from quinacridone magenta or rose, with cobalt or ultramarine blues (and perhaps white). I’m looking at lefranc as it appears to be high chroma, pale version mostly but all 3 seem very luscious I’m tempted to get one of each… or even thinking of ‘shin han’ cobalt violet, blue and green which are super cheap and still not that dull, to try out if they resemble the paints they are supposed to at all. I tried an imitation, schminke apatite pigment which seemed nothing like the high chroma violets. I’ve never tried cobalt blues, greens and violets because of their expense, although cobalt teal/turquoise light is indispensible for me, it is a big ‘hole’ in my colour wheel and pthalos and ultramarines don’t get along too well with me. ![]() See the W3C color names for a full list of color names or look for (W3C) in the table below. My paint collection is large, I prefer to pick out a different pallette of ~4-10 for painting.
